Crack Rings
A training board for hand and fist jams.
A dedicated training board for hand and fist jamming — the two jams that punish you most on real rock and that a fingerboard cannot train.
- Trains hand and fist jams, which a fingerboard cannot
- Builds jam-specific skin and technique off the rock
Overview
What it is
Crack Rings is a training board for hand and fist jams.
Everything else in a home training setup ignores jamming. A fingerboard trains crimps and open-hand positions; a campus board trains contact strength. Neither touches the movement that decides whether you send a hand crack, which is the shape you make with your hand and the pressure you can hold it under while your feet do very little.
Why train jams off the rock
Two reasons, and both are about time.
Skin. Jam-specific skin — on the backs of the hands, on the knuckles — takes weeks to build and disappears in days. If your crack season is short, you spend the first third of it rebuilding what you had last year.
Pattern. A good hand jam is a shape, held. That shape is learnable indoors, away from the pump and the fear, in a way that transfers directly.
How to use it
Short, frequent sessions beat long ones. Skin and tendons adapt on a slower schedule than muscle, and indoors there is no runout to tell you to stop.
Frequently asked questions
What does it train that a fingerboard does not?
A fingerboard trains open-hand and crimp strength. Jamming is a different problem — it is about the shape you make with the hand and the pressure you hold it under. Crack Rings let you practise that pattern indoors.
Will it toughen my skin?
That is a large part of the point. Jam-specific skin on the backs of the hands takes weeks to build and days to lose; regular sessions keep it.
